1. Overview About Sweet Onion Sauce

Overview About Sweet Onion Sauce

For its sandwiches, Subway once included a condiment called sweet onion sauce. A number of different ingredients are added to the basis of water, vinegar, and sweet onion.

The desire for sauces comparable to it hasn’t diminished even though Subway no longer sells them. I was aware that it was comparable to Veeba’s and Ken’s Sweet Vidalia Dressing. I then conducted a great deal of experimentation to create my own copycat Sweet Onion Sauce recipe using this knowledge and some other recipes I discovered.

We love Sweet onion sauce because:

  • Easy: This recipe just requires three steps: whisk, combine, and strain.
  • Affordable: You can create this sauce repeatedly using inexpensive, common ingredients.
  • Use Subway sweet onion sauce over a variety of foods, including salads, sandwiches, wraps, and more. There are countless alternatives!
  • It can be altered to be sugar-free, creamy, spicy, or very herbaceous. This sauce is very simple to modify.

2. Sweet Onion Sauce – Is It Vegan?

This vegan-friendly sweet onion sauce is similar to the original in that it doesn’t use any ingredients that are produced from animals. Use organic vegan sugar that hasn’t been treated with bone char if you’re extra particular about how your ingredients are handled. 3. Sweet Onion Sauce – Needed Ingredients

  • White or yellow onions can be used, but I like white onions for their crisp, pure flavor. I also advise buying sweet onion varietals like Vidalia and Walla Walla, if you can find them.
  • Adding water will help the sauce and potato starch blend together.
  • Sugar: Sweetens the dish and balances and enhances the onions’ inherent sweetness. Use granulated sugar made from cane or vegan sugar.
  • White wine vinegar: I like the flavor of white wine vinegar over conventional white vinegar since it is a little sweeter, gentler, and more delicate. It produces a sauce that is well-balanced rather than one where the acidity dominates.
  • Poppyseeds: Don’t forget to add poppyseeds, just like Subway’s sweet onion sauce!
  • Salt and pepper: Enhances the sauce’s taste while giving it a little zing!
  • To thicken the sauce, use potato starch. Cornstarch works well as a stand-in for potato starch if you don’t have any.

4. Sweet Onion Sauce – Detailed Instructions

To begin, thinly slice a Vidalia onion (or any sweet onion). No olive oil for this one; instead, use a tiny quantity of a neutral-flavored oil, such grapeseed oil, to brown the onion in the pan. It should take around 12 minutes to cook them softly and thoroughly.

Place the browned onions in a blender along with 1/4 cup water, salt, and other ingredients. Using a fine mesh strainer, remove the onion pulp after blending the mixture until it is smooth. The onion pulp can be saved and used to flavor other dishes like mashed potatoes or gravies.

Back in the pan, add sugar, vinegar, cornstarch for thickening, onion and garlic powder, and the liquid from the onion combination. After removing the lumps, bring the mixture to a boil. Instantaneously lower the heat, then simmer for a few minutes while continuously whisking.

Turn off the heat and allow to cool. The homemade sweet onion sauce is then prepared, and you may have it with a handmade submarine sandwich or a salad like my Picnic Fried Chicken Salad. It can also be kept in a jar in the refrigerator.

Note: Other ingredients in some recipes that I didn’t think were required include poppy seeds, mustard, and black pepper. Poppy seeds just enhance the appearance, but feel free to use them if you choose. Add up to 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper for more spice if desired.

Good news if you have sauce left over! By following these storage recommendations, it may be kept for a considerable amount of time:

  • Fridge: This dressing can remain fresh for up to a month in the fridge as long as it is stored in an airtight container (I prefer a mason jar for this).
  • Freezer: This sauce freezes well, and it may be kept for up to three months. Simply store it in a jar or container that is freezer-safe.
  • defrost: Place the sauce in the refrigerator overnight to defrost before using it again. When you get up in the morning, stir it up, especially if it’s divided.

6. Sweet Onion Sauce – Top Tips

  • Into the pot, mix and drain the onions to get the smoothest sweet onion sauce possible.
  • Don’t skip boiling the sauce; it’s important for blending the flavors and thickening it.
  • Create a slurry by combining the potato starch with a little water before adding it to the sauce to avoid clumping.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Sweet Onion Sauce is a flavorful and versatile condiment that adds a delightful twist to a variety of dishes. Its combination of the sweet and savory flavors of onions creates a unique taste that enhances the overall culinary experience. Whether used as a dip, a marinade, or a topping, this sauce is sure to impress taste buds and elevate any meal. With its easy preparation and delicious results, the Sweet Onion Sauce is a must-have addition to any kitchen pantry.
